In order to see the best results, you’ll need to understand how to properly use a 4-jaw chuck lathe machine. Take a look at our breakdown of how to successfully use a lathe machine:

  1. You want to start by setting all of the jaws to an equal distance from the outside edge. This way, you will be creating space for yourself to insert the workpiece.

  2. Next, you’re going to want to insert the workpiece. After you slide that piece in, gently tighten the jaws against it. Be careful not to overly tighten it at this point.

  3. Place a dial indicator on the tip centered on the workpiece stock.

  4. You will then want to rotate the chuck until you find the low and high swings. Once you’ve discovered those swings, move the chuck to the lowest swing and zero at this time.

  5. Now you will want to rotate the chuck and find the highest swing.

  6. Following finding the highest swing, you’re going to want to get a calculator. You’ll need to divide the highest swing number by two and then rotate the chuck back to that number.

  7. At this halfway point, you’ll now want to zero the dial indicator.

  8. After step seven, you’ll need to adjust the axis by moving the closest jaw to the dial indicator parallel to the indicator.

  9. At this point, you want to loosen the two jaws and adjust them until the dial indicator reads zero on both ends of the rotation.

  10. You can now go ahead and repeat the process on the other two axes.
